Just like anything that has a big following, roulette has its own jargon, slang or terminology. Of course, one of the beauties of playing online, is that you needn´t know any of it- you can just learn as you go. But if you head off to Las Vegas, Monaco or Macau and want to spend some time betting at the roulette tables without looking like a complete novice, it´s worth studying the following glossary- so at least you feel the part.
-A bet on the layout - A wager on the numbers bit of the table.
-American roulette - A version of the game in which the wheel has a 0 pocket AND a 00 pocket.
-Call bets - These bets are asked for or announced verbally on French or European tables and include Voisins du Zero, Tiers du Cylindre and Orphelins (see below).
-Carré - a Corner bet.
-Cheval - a Split bet.
-Column bet - There are 3 columns of numbers (groups) that you can bet on which pay out at 2:1
-Combination Bet - a hedge bet where you combine bets on the same spin to reduce your risk of losing. However, you will also lower your rate of return on a win.
-Corner bet - A 4 number bet which pays out 8:1.
-Dozen bet - an outside bet covering the following groups of numbers: 1-12, or 13-24 or 25-36.
-En plein - A straight up bet.
-En prison - when you are betting on the even money bets (red/black, even/odd, Hi/Lo). When the ball land in the zero pocket, casinos that play the en prison rule will give you half your bet back or repeat the bet for anouther round.
-European roulette - A type of roulette in which the wheel has only one zero pocket (as opposed to American Roulette).
-Even - Odd Bet. Pays out even money.
-Five number bet - Only available in American roulette- a bet on 0, 00, 1, 2, and 3. Low odds- avoid this one if you can.
-High - Low Bet. Bet on the following groups: (19-36) or (1-18). Pays even money.
-Inside bet - A bet on individual numbers (as opposed to an outside bet- on groups of numbers). So called because of the layout on the table.
-La partage - like "en prison" except you lose half the bet and you are not able to leave your bet "en prison" for the next spin. Only on the even money outside bets.
-Orphelins (orphans) - a bet on a group of numbers that make up the two slices of the wheel outside the Tiers and Voisins. A total of eight numbers, the Orphans are 17,34,6 and the Orphelins are 1,20,14,31,9.
-Outside Bet- any bet that is not a number bet and sits outside the inside bets on the table. Eg red, black, odd, even, high, low etc
-Payout- the money paid by the roulette table to the player. Also the house edge. A higher payout is good as this means a lower house edge. European Roulette has a higher payout than American Roulette.
-Red-Black Bet- Pays 1:1. Odds are slightly less that 50-50 because of the zero pocket (this is what gives the house its advantage over the long term).
-Six line bet or Sixainne - A bet on 6 numbers simultanously.

To bet this, place 6 chips as follows:. 1 chip is placed on each of these split bets: 5/8; 10/11; 13/16; 23/24; 27/30; 33/36.
-Tier 5,8,10,11- a type pf Tiers du cylindre in which an extra chip is bet as a straight up bet (individual numbers) on 5, 8, 10 and 11; and so is a 10-piece bet.

To make the bet, use 9 chips as follows: 2 chips on the 0,2,3 trio, 1 on the 4/7 split; 1 on the 12/15 split; 1 on the 18/21 spilt; 1 on 19/22; 2 on the 25/26/28/29 corner bet; and 1 on the 32/35 split.
-Zero (0), Double Zero (00) :the green coloured pocket on the wheel. European Roulette only has a 0 pocket. American Roulette has a 0 pocket AND a 00 pocket. the odds are better on a European wheel.
